ESL Library is Heading to TESOL 14 in Oregon

Portland, Here We Come!

It’s time to get packing again! The ESL Library team is gearing up for the annual TESOL convention. This year’s conference takes place in Portland, Oregon, and we’re excited to find out what the ELT community will do to help Keep Portland Weird (the city’s unofficial slogan).

This year we will be exhibiting beside Sprout English, our sister site for teachers and parents of young English learners. From March 26-29 we’ll be giving web tours, selling subscriptions, and answering questions related to our materials at booth 338 and 340. There will also be daily prize giveaways and special subscription deals for attendees!

While Portland’s city slogan is a bit odd, the TESOL slogan this year is awesome: Explore, Sustain, Renew. We love these exciting verbs, and our goal is to make good use of all three at the convention, and throughout 2014!

We can’t wait to explore the ideas of teachers and trainers from all around the world. As usual, we’ll be splitting our time between meeting teachers at our exhibition booth and learning from presenters at the sessions we attend. We’ll be studying how publishing is changing, and how we can continue to offer materials that teachers love and need.

Our team is coming from Winnipeg (Ben, president), Vancouver (Tanya, editor), and Toronto (me – Tara, writer), and we’re excited about exploring Portland itself. I for one plan to save some time for exploring the gigantic six-floor bookstore. No tax? Portland is also known for its cuisine, which we’ll be sure to explore (bring on the weird). Tanya said that March is Portland Dining Month, when more than 100 restaurants are offering 3-course dinner menus for $29 per person. Watch @ESLlibrary’s comments and tweets for our recommendations as we tour around Portland after hours.

One of the main reasons we go to TESOL conventions every year is to strengthen our relationships with teachers. We receive extremely useful feedback from our long-term subscribers at the booth, and are grateful for each and every teacher and administrator who stops by to show their support.

We also love to talk shop. We are proud members of the online ELT community, and we understand the importance of staying in the loop when it comes to language-teaching trends and technology. That’s how we got nominated for a Shorty Award in #education, after all! We’ll be available to answer questions at any time during exhibit hours. (Maybe you just need to rest and put down your bag for a few minutes. We’ll save a chair for you!) In addition, we’ll be doing two formal presentations about our sites (see below for info).

Anyone who has been to a TESOL convention knows how professional development events help to recharge the batteries! Renewal is important for teachers and publishers, and we attend many online PD events throughout the year in order to stay interested and passionate in what we do. Our team always returns from TESOL inspired and ready to begin new things. Many of our 2012/2013 projects were born out of conversations we had after hours during TESOL dinner chats. Our 2014 list of ideas to discuss and plan in Portland is growing by the minute. New subscribers will certainly be joining during an exciting year!
