Podcast – National Indigenous Peoples Day

National Indigenous Peoples Day

Intermediate

June 21 is the beginning of the summer solstice. In 1996, the governor general of Canada declared June 21 as Aboriginal Day. On June 21, 2017, Prime Minister Trudeau announced the official name change to National Indigenous Peoples Day.

Today’s podcast features a reading from our Holidays & Events lesson on National Indigenous Peoples Day. In the ready-made lesson plan, students read a brief bio about this holiday and its origin. They review new vocabulary and discuss the topic of multiculturalism.

Should National Indigenous Peoples Day be a public holiday throughout Canada?
